Genetec Inc., a leading supplier of enterprise physical security software, has introduced a new capability for its Security Center SaaS platform: built-in cloud audio communications. The enhancement integrates SIP-based intercom voice directly within the unified interface, allowing security operators to manage video, access control and audio in one system rather than juggling separate tools. The feature was launched globally in September 2025 via Genetec’s network of certified distributor partners.

Enhancing Security Center SaaS with Native Intercom Audio

Until now,Genetec had long provided SIP-based audio and intercom features in its on-premises versions of Security Center. The new addition brings that capability into the cloud realm, embedding real-time voice into the Security Center SaaS interface. The aim is to allow security teams in sectors such as education, retail and healthcare to interact with individuals at access points, verify identities via live video, and take appropriate action—all without leaving the unified environment.

Christian Morin, Vice President of Product Engineering at Genetec, emphasises that the company seeks to grant clients the same flexibility over audio that they already enjoy with video and access control. Organisations will be free to select the intercom hardware that best suits their needs and manage it via the native cloud platform, rather than being locked into a closed proprietary system. At launch, the system will support Axis intercom devices, with plans to support additional vendors in future updates.

The communication feature is designed to scale — from a handful of intercoms in smaller premises to several thousand in large enterprise deployments. Because it is cloud-native and built on an open architecture, organisations can begin with modest deployments, validate use cases, and expand as needs grow.

Axis Communications, whose intercoms are initially supported, notes that its Axis Cloud Connect integration allows these devices to be managed within the same platform used to handle video surveillance, access control, intrusion detection and analytics. This unified approach is intended to improve situational awareness and shorten incident response time.

Role of Security Center and Genetec Platform in Unified Security

Genetec positions itself as a pioneer in unified physical security software, with its flagship Security Center platform combining IP video surveillance, access control, automatic license plate recognition (ALPR), communications and other modules into one intuitive system. The open architecture approach allows users to choose hardware and add-ons over time, customise integrations, and add capabilities as their security ecosystem evolves. Security Center is trusted by demanding global organisations to consolidate event monitoring, incident response, threat intelligence and security operations into one interface.

In its SaaS variant, Security Center delivers all the core enterprise features (video management, access control, intrusion monitoring, search and automation) within a cloud or hybrid deployment model. This enables centralised oversight across multiple sites, easier scaling, and a consistent experience via web and mobile interfaces for both operators and field personnel. One notable strength is the modular subscription model: organisations may choose only video, only access control or any mix of supported devices, and expand as needs evolve.

From an IT perspective, Genetec emphasises the need for cyber-resilient design. Its solutions are built to reduce complexity by consolidating controls into a single user interface, automating operations, supporting single sign-on, and offering built-in safeguards for data privacy and compliance. The company holds certifications including ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27017 and SOC 2 Type II to validate their commitment to information security.

Founded in 1997 in Montreal, Genetec started with an early IP-based video surveillance system, Omnicast, and gradually evolved its architecture to support federation, linking remote sites into cohesive security networks. It later developed Security Center to combine disparate security subsystems into a unified platform. Today, Genetec supports more than 42,500 customers worldwide across 80 countries via a broad ecosystem of resellers, integrators and certified partners. The company also maintains “Experience Centers” in global hubs like Montreal, Paris and London, where clients can see live demonstrations and immersive scenario testing of its portfolio.

Cybersecurity, Privacy and Rollout Plans

To ensure its new communication functionality aligns with high standards for data protection, Genetec has incorporated robust security and privacy safeguards from the outset. Audio data will be treated like video and access logs — encrypted during transmission, logged for event history and subject to strict access control. Software updates and security patches will be pushed automatically to maintain resilience against emerging threats.

With this launch, Genetec continues to evolve its vision of unified security, deepening integration between voice, video and access in one cohesive, scalable platform.
