Bullet Proofing Technology, better known as BPT, exhibited at Milipol Paris for the first time in November, joining the Newcomers Village where emerging suppliers often gain early visibility. With 84 per cent of Milipol Paris visitors actively seeking new products, the environment offered a strategic launchpad for a company already well established in South Africa but looking to broaden export markets. According to Chief Operating Officer Leon Van Der Westhuizen, who was at the show, the decision to attend the exhibition followed a recommendation from a customer who believed BPT’s solutions would closely align with Milipol Paris’ operational focus. This first appearance allowed the team to benchmark their products internationally and meet end users searching for practical and deployable armour systems.
Capabilities Built on Materials Science and Domestic Manufacturing
Based in Krugersdorp, BPT has positioned itself as one of South Africa’s leading manufacturers of armour materials and systems. The company combines in-house production capabilities with a research-driven approach to materials science, enabling the development of armour for personnel, military vehicles, civilian vehicles, aircraft, marine platforms and fixed structures. Its output ranges from ceramic and composite body armour plates to vehicle protection kits, ballistic shields and bullet traps.
The company emphasises product adaptation rather than a one-size-fits-all model. Manufacturing processes such as autoclaving, vacuum laminating, hot pressing and precision cutting allow BPT to tailor solutions to clients’ specific requirements and respond quickly to urgent orders. According to its publicly available figures, the company has produced more than 1.3 million body armour plates and over 2,000 vehicle armour sets for domestic and international customers. This foundation has helped BPT build a reputation for durable, rigorously tested components designed for environments where reliability is essential.
Testing represents a significant part of BPT’s identity. It is currently the only firm in South Africa with SANAS approval to run accredited ballistic tests for body armour, structural armour and vehicle armour within its own laboratory. The facility enables scientific ballistic assessment in accordance with standards such as EN 1023 and STANAG 4569, as well as South Africa’s SANS 1058 standard. Internal testing capabilities also allow BPT to refine new materials early in the development cycle and ensure consistency across production batches.
Feather-Light Level IIIA+: Lightweight Protection for Modern Threats

The Feather-Light plate was engineered in response to evolving handgun threats, including the Tokarev round, which emerged as a significant concern in recent conflicts. As Van Der Westhuizen explained, the product was developed specifically to address this type of ammunition while maintaining a thin and lightweight form factor. The plate also protects against 9 x 19 mm FMJ RN lead-core rounds travelling at 436 metres per second and .44 Magnum SJHP rounds at the same velocity.
BPT’s wider body armour portfolio includes both stand-alone plates and ICW plates intended for use with soft armour. The company’s approach blends ceramics, aramid fibres, UHMWPE, high-strength fibreglass and specialised composites, drawing on the advantages of each material in targeted configurations. The Feather-Light plate builds on this expertise and reflects an industry-wide trend toward reducing weight and increasing user comfort without compromising on performance.
A Promising First Outing in the Newcomers Village

The event also provided an opportunity to measure BPT’s portfolio against competing technologies. As Van Der Westhuizen observed, the company used the exhibition partly as a benchmarking exercise and found that its products compared favourably with global offerings. “For a South African company, we've shown that we hold up to standards regarding projection levels, weights, capabilities and overall design,” he said. This feedback reinforced BPT’s confidence as it evaluates future participation across the Milipol network, including potential plans to exhibit at Milipol Qatar next October.
Looking ahead, BPT’s ambitions centre on international expansion supported by domestic manufacturing and advanced testing capabilities. The reception of the Feather-Light Level IIIA+ plate at Milipol Paris suggests that lightweight, adaptable protection solutions will continue to shape operational expectations. For BPT, the show marked an important step in translating local expertise into global presence, with its newest innovation at the forefront of that trajectory.
